1️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ Final: Paul Mitzel is the champion of the 120th PNGA Men’s Amateur at Gold Mountain

🏁Final: 120th PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship from Gold Mountain GC – Cascade and Olympic in Bremerton, WA. Championship featured 36 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play for the top 64 players.

Paul Mitzel of Quincy, WA, a mid-amateur player, captured the title with a 3&2 win in the championship match over Colt Sherrell of Maple Valley, WA. Mitzel played over 150 holes for the week and won the match play bracket after qualifying as the 11 seed. Last week, Mitzel led the 2022 Washington Mid-Amateur by two strokes on the event’s final hole before Tom Brandes’ heroics with a hole-out eagle and birdie in a playoff swiped the trophy away.

Mitzel’s highlighted victories in 2021 and 2022 include two Tacoma City Amateur’s, 2021 Bellevue City Amateur and 2022 Washington Men’s Four-Ball.

The championship match was staged on Gold Mountain’s Olympic Course. Mitzel’s name will be etched on the championship trophy which includes 1994 winner Tiger Woods.

📝Personal Note: NW Golf Report’s Owner/Operator, Sean Packer, played alongside Mitzel in June 2022 in the final pairing of the Tacoma City Amateur. Mitzel struck three absolutely amazing shots that day. Looking back those shots foreshadowed how tough of an out Mitzel would be in match play. When discussing our summer schedules Mitzel mentioned he wouldn’t be able to defend the Bellevue City Amateur due to playing in the PNGA Men’s Amateur. I suggested he still enter Bellevue because only finalists wouldn’t be able to play. Mitzel didn’t sign up for the Bellevue City Amatuer, he clearly had his eye on winning this prestigious championship.
